On average, you can expect your dishwasher to last from seven to 10 years, but the decision on whether to repair or replace a faulty appliance is more complicated than that. Dishwashers have many parts that work together to make them serve their purpose. These components can wear out or break; oftentimes all you need to do is replace them. But repair costs can add up significantly over time, so the decision to repair or replace your appliance isn’t always easy.

Repair Cost
The general consensus among appliance professionals is that, if it costs more than 50% of the price of a new dishwasher to fix one, then replacing it is a good idea. Replacement parts for older models are often pricey and hard to find. But sometimes new appliance costs make it more practical to repair the one you have; that is unless frequent repair jobs have you paying for labor and other fees over and over again.
Another consideration is the type of repair. A door latch, noisy motor or sprayer, or drainage issue is usually easy to fix. But if the appliance goes out often, has a major leak, or the control panel is dead, the expense of fixing the problem may not be worth it. You’re probably better off with a new dishwasher.
Age
If your appliance is more than 10 years old, finding replacement parts can be tough. Nonetheless, just because it reaches a certain age doesn’t mean you must replace it right away. Maintenance is one factor in helping it last longer. Proper cleaning, routine adjustments, and minor repairs can mean even an older dishwasher meets your needs. Condition
Various common issues warrant simple solutions. Foul odors can be addressed by cleaning/replacing the filter, white residue on dishes can be corrected by replacing the trap screen, or a leaky door can be fixed by getting a new door or replacing the pump seals. Even if the dishwasher doesn’t fill, the water inlet valve can be replaced, or you may need a new filter screen. When the unit isn’t cleaning your dishes, the sprayer arm may be clogged or damaged (unclogging or replacing it is easier than getting a new dishwasher).
If water is pooling at the bottom, the dishwasher is starting to rust, there’s water on the floor, or the appliance is cracked, it’s a good time to replace it.
Warranty
The cost of repairs is likely covered if your appliance is still under warranty. In this case, the most economical choice is to fix it. Some issues here include finding a factory-authorized repair company. But as long as the warranty hasn’t expired and you’ve complied with its terms, including having had routine maintenance, repairing it is the cheaper option.
