Do’s and Don’ts of Washer and Dryer Maintenance

Do’s and Don’ts of Washer and Dryer Maintenance

You might not use your washer and dryer every day (or perhaps you do), but these are sure hard-working appliances. Proper maintenance helps them work better and last longer. Otherwise, they may not run reliably or provide clean clothes. A lack of maintenance or proper care can result in expensive repairs. When it comes to washer and dryer maintenance, following these do’s and don’ts can help get more out of your machine.

Washer/Dryer Do’s

  • Do: Keep Your Appliances Clean — Your washer and dryer are built to clean but must themselves be kept clean. If not, dust and lint can build up inside, affecting performance. Bacteria can build up as well. Dryer vents should be cleaned regularly to improve airflow and prevent fires.
  • Do: Clean the Dispenser Every Time — Dispensers for detergent, bleach, and fabric softener should be cleaned after each use. Otherwise, buildup can cause a clog. Also, follow cleaning guidelines in the machine’s owner’s manual. Deep clean the lint trap every six to eight weeks using hot water and a brush.
  • Do: Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions — Each washer and dryer model has its own requirements for maintenance. Be sure to follow the instructions, as the same techniques and products used for your old system may not be appropriate for the new one.
  • Do: Run Full Loads — Running a full load means using the machine less, reducing wear and tear. It also lowers energy costs. Also be sure to empty your pockets of tissues, paper (including money), credit cards, gum, and other items that can cause a clog. If any items have straps or loose hardware, place them in a mesh laundry bag before starting a wash.
  • Do: Shake Clothes Out Before Drying — Shake each article of clothing out before transferring it to the dryer. This allows the dryer to do its job more effectively and can prevent wrinkling.

Washer/Dryer Don’ts

  • Don’t: Overload the Machine — Overloading a washer or dryer will make it work harder, and make it more difficult to clean each item. When clothes are squished together and there’s less room for them to circulate, they may not get as clean and soap residue may be left behind. Read the manual to see how much the machine is designed to handle.
  • Don’t: Leave Clothes in the Washer — It may seem like a safe place, but clothes should be removed once the cycle is complete. Otherwise, you can create an environment for mold to grow. The washer and your clothes may start to smell and the odor can be hard to remove. Once your remove clothes, also leave the door open for the machine to air dry.
  • Don’t: Use Too Much Detergent — Excess detergent can result in soapy residue on clothes after a wash. It can also damage the machine; newer systems are more vulnerable because they’re designed to use less detergent. Using too much detergent can cause unpleasant odors and leave a slimy film on the drum.
  • Don’t: Add Items That Aren’t Machine-Washable — You can keep your appliances in good condition by not washing items meant to be hand washed. These include bras and lingerie with underwire, which can cause damage to both the washer and dryer. Don’t wash rugs with a rubber backing, as the rubber can melt or flake off in the dryer.
  • Don’t: Use Too Many Dryer Sheets — These can soften clothes, improve their smell, and eliminate static cling. However, some products have a waxy layer that can melt in the dryer and make a mess. It can clog the lint trap screen as well. If using dryer sheets, clean the lint trap after each use and, every couple of months, rinse it in warm sudsy water.
