When to buy appliances? Buying appliances for your home is an expensive endeavor. However, the buying process doesn’t have to leave you high and dry every time. But there are times of the year when a budget-conscious shopper can find a deal that makes it worth the wait. You could easily spend into the thousands if you don’t do your research carefully. But here’s a look into the best time you should shop around and make your purchase.

When New Models Roll Out

A great time to buy an appliance is when the manufacturer starts to introduce the latest models. This is when retailers need to clear out old inventory, so they reduce prices on the previous years’ items. For washers/dryers and dishwashers, this is usually in September and October; for refrigerators, it’s usually in May. You will also typically find new ranges/ovens introduced sometime in January.

Also, manufacturers sometimes run promotions for the first few months after a model release. This means you could save big even on the latest appliances.

The Best Off-Season Purchases

When appliances are in low demand, prices tend to be lower. You can therefore save if you invest in an air conditioner during the cooler season and a heater in the summer. Try to purchase an AC or heater in October or November or April or May. During these times, HVAC suppliers tend to be overstocked and more likely to offer installers a discount. HVAC companies too are likely to negotiate lower rates as there are fewer service calls. Purchasing a gas grill or furnace during the “off-season” can mean significant savings as well.

Major Holidays

While prices tend to be highest at the time of a new model release, the next holiday or sales event is a different story. The best holidays for appliance sales include Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. On Black Friday of 2018, leading retailers had discounted appliances from 25% to 60% off their list prices.

For refrigerators, Fourth of July sales have beaten some of those on Black Friday, according to an analysis by Consumer Reports. While Labor Day is popular for closeout sales on patio furniture and summer clothing, appliances (and even mattresses) are often subject to seasonal promotions. You are also likely to find limited time discounts in November on Veterans Day, especially for military members (current and former).

Ranges are often released early in the year. Average prices tend to stay high through the spring, with the best discounts during holidays after July Fourth. When promotions do occur for some brands, discounts are often deeper for higher-priced models, but Wolf ranges generally stay relatively consistent throughout the year. Premium brands often stick to alternative incentives, such as free installation.

End of the Year

Prices of microwaves, toaster ovens, coffee makers, and other small appliances tend to be lowest toward the end of the year, in November and December. This is a critical time for retailers. Most look to clear out excess inventory to make way for next year’s models.

Do Not Buy Appliances When Yours Gives Out

Waiting until your appliance is on its last leg often results in paying more to replace it at a time when sales are few and far between. It’s therefore important to be aware of your appliance’s condition. Also know its average lifespan so you can plan ahead. On average, dishwashers last about 9 years, refrigerators about 13 years, and gas ranges/ovens about 15 years. Electric ovens and ranges typically last for about 13 years.
