Clean the Condenser First
This is the fix most people skip, and it is the most common one on a Sub-Zero. Dust and pet hair clog the condenser coils; the unit can’t dissipate heat, the freezer warms up, and ice production drops. Left long enough, a dirty condenser can even damage the compressor.Clean it every 6 to 12 months. On a refrigerator, the condenser sits behind the upper grille. On a Sub-Zero undercounter ice maker, you remove the lower grille, which is usually held by a few screws. Cut the power, vacuum the coils with a brush attachment, clear the tight spots with a soft brush, then replace the grille and restore power.Check the Freezer Temperature
For a refrigerator with a built-in ice maker, set the freezer to 0°F. Anything above 5°F slows or stops ice. If the freezer is running warm, fix that first, because a warm freezer points to a cooling problem, often the dirty condenser above, not the ice maker itself.An undercounter unit is different. Its ice bin is not refrigerated, so ice melts in a warm room. Keep the space cool (around 70°F) and out of direct sunlight. A garage or a sunny corner will fight you.
Inspect the Water Supply and Pressure
No water in means no ice out. Find the shutoff valve and make sure it is fully open. It may sit under the kitchen sink, behind the kickplate, in a nearby cabinet, or near a whole-home filter. Follow the line for kinks, and thaw any section that has frozen.Water pressure matters too. Low pressure gives you small or hollow cubes, or no fill at all. Homes on a well or a reverse osmosis system often run low on pressure, and a pressure booster can help. If your cubes are coming out undersized, low pressure is the likely cause.Replace the Water Filter
Use a genuine Sub-Zero filter. Third-party filters are not tested to Sub-Zero’s specs and can slow the ice maker or affect your warranty. Replace it every 6 to 12 months, and reseat it even when it is not due, since a loose filter can interrupt flow. Run water through the dispenser afterward to clear trapped air. Make sure the ice bin is level and fully seated. On some models, the bin presses the ice maker switch, so an unseated bin stops production entirely. Check that the shut-off arm is down.If ice has clumped into a block, empty the bin and break it up. Warm a frozen fill tube gently with a hair dryer on a low setting. A Sub-Zero undercounter ice maker, sometimes called an under-counter or under-cabinet ice maker, or an undercounter ice machine, works a little differently from the one in your refrigerator. A few extra points keep the UC-15I and 315I producing:- The bin isn’t refrigerated, so a cool room is essential.
- The grille needs clear airflow. Don’t block it, and keep that condenser clean.
- These models need periodic cleaning and sanitizing with Sub-Zero’s own solution to prevent buildup and odor.
- Check that the drain line isn’t kinked, and run the unit on stable household power rather than a generator.
When to Call a Sub-Zero Technician
If the ice maker is on, the bin is seated, the arm is down, the condenser is clean, and the water and pressure are good, but you still have no ice, the fault is likely inside the machine.
